It always seems to happen at the same time each year, when the weather starts to shift and those warm days slowly give way to cooler mornings, and you find yourself reaching for a jumper you haven’t worn in months while the kids wake up just that little bit slower than usual.
At first it’s just a sniffle here and there, maybe the occasional cough that doesn’t seem like much, but within a few days it turns into that familiar pattern where something has clearly made its way home from school or daycare, and suddenly everyone has the same dry, lingering cough that just doesn’t seem to go anywhere.
It’s not always serious, but it’s enough to wear you down, especially when it lingers in the background all day and then somehow feels louder at night, when the house is quiet and you’re walking down the hallway to check on them, offering water, pulling blankets back up, and trying to help them settle again.
And by the next morning, everything carries on as usual, because school lunches still need to be made, work still needs to happen, and life doesn’t really slow down just because everyone’s a bit run down.
Over time, I’ve learnt to pick my moments with all of this, because while there’s absolutely a place for medicine, there are also those in-between stages where things aren’t severe, just lingering and uncomfortable, and that’s usually where I find myself reaching for something simpler, something that doesn’t turn into a whole process.
For us, that’s always been honey.
Our Go-To Honey Remedy at Home
The reason we come back to this every year is because it’s simple enough to fit into real life without needing to think twice about it, and when you’ve got a busy household, that matters more than anything else.
All you need is a tablespoon of honey mixed into warm (not hot) water, and if you have it on hand, a squeeze of fresh lemon works really well too, then just sip it slowly.
We tend to make this in the evening when the cough starts to feel worse and everyone’s just wanting to sleep, but it’s just as useful during the day when things are lingering in the background and you’re trying to take the edge off without stopping everything else you’ve got going on.
Why Honey Is a Trusted Home Remedy for Cough
Honey has been used as a home remedy for cough for generations, and once you start using it in your own home, it makes sense why it’s stuck around for so long, because it has this way of gently coating the throat and softening that scratchy irritation that triggers coughing in the first place.
It doesn’t feel harsh or complicated, and it doesn’t require you to overthink anything, it just works quietly in the background, which, when everything else feels busy, is exactly what you want.
It’s also incredibly easy with kids, because it doesn’t feel like medicine, and you’re not trying to convince them or negotiate with them to take it, it’s something warm and familiar that they’ll usually have without any fuss, which makes a bigger difference than you realise when everyone’s already tired.
The Natural Properties of Honey
Part of what makes honey so useful comes down to its natural properties, particularly its soothing effect and gentle antibacterial qualities, which can help when your body is already run down or your throat is irritated. There’s also been quite a bit of research around this, with sources like the Mayo Clinic noting that honey may help calm coughs and support better sleep when you’re dealing with upper respiratory symptoms.
But something I’ve come to appreciate over time is that not all honey is the same, especially once it’s been heavily processed, which is why we’ve always been quite particular about the honey we use at home.
Our honey is raw and settled, which means it hasn’t been heat-treated or overly processed in a way that strips it back, so it stays much closer to how it comes from the hive, and there’s something reassuring about that, especially when you’re giving it to your kids.
It also removes a layer of stress that can come with other options, because there’s no watching the clock or trying to remember when you last gave something, no counting backwards or forwards in your head while you’re already tired, you can simply give it when they need it without turning it into something complicated.
From what I’ve seen in our own home, it’s not about it being a cure for anything, it’s just something that helps take the edge off, settles that constant irritation, and makes everything feel a bit more manageable while things run their course.
Why This Works (Without Overthinking It)
There’s no big routine behind it, and that’s part of why it works so well, because the honey helps soothe and coat the throat while the warmth makes it easy to take, and together it’s enough to ease that constant urge to cough without turning it into a whole process.
It’s not about fixing everything overnight, it’s simply about making things more manageable, helping everyone get through the day, and hopefully the night, with a bit more comfort.
Manuka for Cough Honey – But It’s Not the Only Option
Manuka honey is often referenced as a medicinal honey, so it’s fair to assume that Manuka is great for a cough. Manuka honey has built that reputation over time, which is why it’s usually the first thing people think of when they’re trying to suppress a cough naturally, but it’s not the only honey with those kinds of properties.
Here in Western Australia, Jarrah honey is often compared to Manuka and, in many cases, actually shows higher antimicrobial activity, it just hasn’t had the same level of attention.
When you’re reaching for honey to help with a cough, it’s rarely about chasing a specific label, it’s about something that soothes, supports, and hasn’t been over-processed, which is where raw, minimally handled honey matters more than anything else.
Manuka absolutely has its place, but it’s not the only option, and a good quality Jarrah honey offers a more local, less processed alternative that delivers that same soothing comfort people are looking for in the first place.
Keeping It Simple
There’s always going to be stronger options and more advice out there, and they all have their place, but when you’re in the middle of it, dealing with broken sleep, constant coughing and everything else that doesn’t stop, sometimes the most helpful thing is just having something simple you can reach for without overthinking it.
For us, honey has always been that, something that doesn’t feel like a big deal, doesn’t add stress, and quietly helps when you need it, which is probably why we find ourselves coming back to it every single year.
